Butleigh Playing Fields Association

The Playing Field and Childrens Playgrounds in Butleigh are owned by the Parish Council but are administered and maintained by the Butleigh Playing Fields Association.   The Parish Council provides some funding and leases the facilities to the association but the maintenance, administration and fund raising is all down to a small group of local villagers.

The compact “Back Town” site boasts two acres of grass pitch area and an area of hard standing, suitable for ball-games and skating.  Football, touch rugby, rounders, netball, basketball and a cricket practice area are just some of the facilities on offer.

The facilities on-site reflect the committees desire to work with the existing village sporting bodies to provide a suitable, pertinent and, hopefully, sustainable facility. Tucked away behind high, hawthorn hedgerows there are occasions when an unsuspecting visitor might miss the playing field in the quiet, rural, Somerset village of Butleigh. Unsurprising, given that the village itself is somewhat off the beaten track, sitting in the middle of a triangle of small market towns - Glastonbury, Street and Somerton are all within 4/5 miles.  Butleigh is currently home to approximately 900 people, has a small local primary school, a pub and a village post office stores.

When not reserved and or in use for local league fixtures or private functions the facilities are all made available to the local community at no cost.   Cricket nets, goal posts with nets and basketball rings are left available for all to use.

Parties and Barbeques

The excellent and well maintained pavilion and pitches also affords the locals the opportunity to hold birthday parties and barbeques for a very modest fee.   A fully fitted kitchen, toilet facilities, function room and ample outside space affords a wonderful venue.

Fund Raising

A monthly draw, an annual Multi Terrain Run, Quiz Night and a bi annual May Ball are just some of the attractions offered to the villagers and provide revenue for the upkeep of the facilities.
